When in Gardenprue we considered making this section of the garden month by month a year ago, we would not imagine that it would happen so quickly this year. We cannot believe that we are writing the last month in the orchard. A whole year with all its days! It was clear that for the last month in the orchard, he had to give us some truce. The orchard in December takes vacations.
ORCHARD WEATHER IN DECEMBER
December is a hard month in the garden even if little work is done. December is thought to be a harsh month when it comes to weather, but averages for years and years are not misleading. January and February are even tougher. It will be for the short days but December is the first month that we find it a bit uphill. The orchard gives little work, but it gives something. Frosts happen, it all depends on the climatic zone, but that is usually the picture. Get up in the morning and see the orchard with frost and maybe the occasional snowfall. It is a cold month, not as cold as the following months that await us, but in the garden it is always cold. It may seem unpleasant to work in the garden during this month but the truth is that you do not have to work too much.
ORCHARD ACTIVITIES IN DECEMBER ARE PLANNING
We have few plantings and transplants, although we will review them a little later. The most important thing this month is to collect everything that we have left in the warm areas, where we will still have succulent products and the garden will continue to be very active . collards, watercress, cauliflower, endive, lettuce, potatoes, leeks, beets, carrots … In hot areas the garden hardly has a rest during the year. Only the one that we dedicate or need. In cold areas, especially frosts, they will mark the end of 90% of the crops and during the winter months we will have a small truce.
Due to this winter break or rest, December is a good month to plan the next season. Things we can do:
IMPROVE ASPECTS OF THE GARDEN
Surely during this year, as you worked, you have been observing deficiencies or aspects to improve: infrastructure, irrigation, orientation of terraces, dead spaces … All those inconveniences suffered during the intense work of the orchard in previous months, must help you to improve it. December is a good month to review and re-plan everything that you think can improve the garden and above all, aspects that fall on physical effort. Everything that helps you reduce the physical load will make the garden more pleasant and enjoyable. Things like the raised bed for example.
IT TOUCHES TO PLAN CROPS
If you are a beginner and have started in the garden with a few crops, it is time for you to increase the products. This requires more planning of seedlings, staggered plantings, planning well the spaces on the terraces … At first it can be a mess but with organization, patience, pencil and paper everything works out.
TIME TO SEE OUR SEEDS
If you have been proactive, you will have saved seed from many of the products that you were collecting throughout the year. It is a good time to take a look and buy what we will need for the next season. Always keep in mind the viability of the seeds . Watch how long they have!
The subscriber of the plots that we are not going to use during the winter should be done now. Compost or manure amendments can be added during this month so that the soil assimilates and integrates into its structure all those nutrients that the crops will appreciate when spring arrives. The orchard in December is slowed down and without crops. It’s a good month to do this, so go to the compost pile and start putting it to use!
THE ORCHARD IN DECEMBER IS DORMANT… BUT THERE IS STILL PLANTING WORK!
In cold areas, we are clear that nothing at all. In temperate zones we can still think of some leeks, lettuces, endives, radishes and the occasional cabbage. All this outdoors without any problem.
With this article we put an end to the garden section month by month. This does not mean that we leave the items as is. We will improve them, adding information that we have overlooked or we believe is important to mention. The only way to find out about these renewals is if you subscribe to our mailing list. We will inform subscribers of these news.
