Nematanthus gregarius cultivation

Following the line of somewhat different indoor flowers as we proposed in the cultivation of the red trumpeter, today we will talk about another indoor plant that is also shrubby. The Nematanthus gregarius . Its flowers this time in the shape of a small funnel, and with some imagination we will see a small orange fish instead of a flower.

In fact, it is known as a golden fish plant. A graceful and flowery creeping shrub with a very good presence in galleries and sunny interiors.

CARACTERISTICS FOR SEEING ( NEMATANTHUS GREGARIUS )

  • As we have just mentioned, the flowers last a long time on the plant, assuming a great ornamental advantage wherever we decide to locate it. We will have flowers from the beginning of spring to the end of autumn, winter being the only period without flower.
  • Another great characteristic of this plant is its green, firm and very shiny leaves with the corresponding decorative value of the same even without the flower.
  • It has a creeping bearing . It is a plant that is not going to get out of hand in height, which makes it perfect for a hanging plant, for example.
  • We have chosen this plant because it is more resistant to environmental dryness than other plants of similar origins and habitats. Heating in winter tends to dry out the environment as we well know. This plant will endure it with integrity.

CUIDAD DEL SEEING ( NEMATANTHUS GREGARIUS )

TEMPERATURES

It is a plant whose origin is found in South America. Specifically in the regions of Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala. This gives us a clue of the required temperatures and conditions. Obviously the resistance to frost is forgotten. The minimum threshold temperature that it can withstand is 5 ºC .

However, although it needs temperatures close to those of a house (20-24 ºC), in winter it is good to rest and somewhat cooler temperatures of between 10 ºC and 15 ºC. Temperatures that we can get on a covered terrace in winter without problems. This is not a “sine qua non” condition, but the plant will appreciate it if it is done.

LIGHT EXPOSURE

It requires high indirect exposure although a little direct sun is not going to hurt you at all. If the other conditions of heat, dryness and temperature are high, then yes it can suffer. It is a very recurrent plant for galleries due to this resistance and its possibility of being hanging.

IRRIGATION

Too many waterings rot the roots. The reference of letting the substrate dry slightly between waterings is a good method. It is not advisable to be very dry but an excess of humidity will be fatal so it is better to err on the side of slightly dry than otherwise.

SUBSTRATE AND SUBSCRIBER

It does not require a substrate with special conditions. A universal one will suffice. Monitor the drainage so that waterlogging does not occur. It is advisable to fertilize with a fertilizer for flowers , (little nitrogen) to maintain a long and abundant flowering.

We will do this from spring to fall. The rest of the year do not pay anything so that you have that winter rest that we have talked about previously.

TRANSPLANT AND ADDITIONAL TIPS

It is convenient to transplant it in spring and do a light pruning of the longest shoots. With this we will be able to make it leafy and full over time. The multiplication of Nematanthus Gregarius is done by cutting the stems in spring with good results. It is not difficult.
